The not-so-secret trick
Here is something that delights every beginner we teach: a remarkable number of pop songs use the same four chords. Learn that one little sequence and you can play along with songs spanning decades, all from your own piano or keyboard at home.
The four chords
In the key of C, the famous progression is C, G, Am and F. Musicians call it the I, V, vi, IV progression, but you do not need the theory to enjoy it. Play those four chords in a loop, one per bar, and you will almost certainly start humming a song you know within seconds.
How to start today
- Learn the shapes. Each chord is just three notes played together. Take them one at a time until your hand finds them without looking.
- Keep a steady beat. Count to four and change chord on beat one. Slow and even beats fast and messy every time.
- Sing or play the tune on top. Once the chords loop comfortably, add the melody or sing along. Suddenly it sounds like a real song.
Why it works so well for beginners
The four-chord trick gives you the thing that keeps people practising: the sound of real music, right away. Instead of months of exercises before anything feels rewarding, you are playing songs you actually love in your very first weeks. That early win is often what turns a curious beginner into a lifelong player.
